Greeting People in English - Part 1

  • 3
There’s a popular expression in English which says that you only have one chance to make a good first impression. This, is certainly true. In society, we usually make our "first impressions" on others often in the ways that we greet them.

How you first greet people when you initially meet them is of course extremely important. If you do not do it in the right way, not only can you cause a potential misunderstanding, but you might genuinely offend someone.

Consider Cultures
The first thing you should consider when you are going to greet someone, is whether or not they are from the same culture.

If they are not, and you know in advance that you are going to meet them, it is recommended that you at least become familiar with the greeting customs which might exist, especially when there are obvious and major differences between cultures.

For example, people greet each other very differently in the Middle East versus in Europe compared to even the United States. Each region of the world is different, as are the people who live there.

The Internet, naturally, is a great source to read up on different cultures and what their different social customs are.

Learn a Few Phrases and Words
It never hurts to learn a few phrases or words from someone else’s language. Not only is it always good to learn new things, but you should try to make a point to use them, under proper circumstances.

For example, try saying things like "It is a pleasure to meet you," or "Nice to meet you," or "It is an honor to meet you."

Joke of the Day: More "Dumb" Laws

In the state of Alabama, it is against the law to put salt on any railroad tracks.

Not only is this against the law, but in Alabama, a person can be legally executed, as in killed, (what is called given capital punishment), if they are caught doing it!

This law goes back to so-called "cowboy days.”

It was believed by lawmakers at that time in Alabama, that if salt were put on railroad tracks, it would attract cows that might be grazing.

If the cows started hanging out near the railroad tracks, a train would inevitably hit them.

This is the reason the law is so severe, and it has never been changed.
