Do You Know The Doctor?

The word doctor is used in several different phrases in the English language. Let’s review some of them. Whenever someone is called "the Doc," this means that the person is either a real doctor, or it could mean that they are simply an expert in their respective field.

Example: "He’s a real doctor when it comes to fixing computers, don’t worry" or "The Doc will see you now, he’ll have your car up and running in less than an hour."

The idea behind calling someone a "Doc" or a "doctor" is to once again convey that they have some sort of expert knowledge.

In this similar way, in the English language, people who have reputations for being very intelligent or "brainy" are often called "Einsteins" or "braniacs" or "Doctors" or "Docs" for short.

Another variation of using the word doctor to identify that someone is indeed an expert at whatever, is to call them by the title of “Doctor" and then use only their first name. Examples:

"Don’t worry, Dr. Tom will fix your motorcycle, he knows all about Harley-Davidsons" or "I took my computer over to your friend, just as you suggested, and sure enough Dr. Pavel fixed it in less than 15 minutes."

When "the doctor is in," this is another way of saying that this person is now ready to provide whatever service or expertise that they are supposed to. Example:

"The doctor is in, he will see you now, please form a line to the left."

Getting ‘taken to school’ by Dr. X
In sports, if you play against someone named "Dr. X" (the “k" in this case refers to the first initial of the person’s first name), this means that you competed against someone who beat you, as in won. Example:

"I got beat by Dr. J in hockey. No wonder, he plays for the NHL."
