Weird Words in English - 1

Every language has some "weird" yet very real words people use. While the English language is relatively easy compared to many others, it still contains hundreds of words which "seem strange" to native speakers.

While most people have no idea what many of these more unusual words mean, let review a few of the more surprising ones.

Bafflegab
The word bafflegab means to say something that makes no sense. This term is a compound word: it consists of the word baffle as well as gab, which is a short way of saying that someone is talking. Examples:

"That politician’s speech was full of nothing but bafflegab. I’m glad I know what the truth is" or "The lawyer tried to confuse the jury with some fancy bafflegab, but the jury was not accepting it."

Humdudgeon
A humdudgeon is another word for any condition or alleged illness which is imaginary. Example:

"She is a humdudgeon, she is always imagining that she has a very serious illness."

Fanfaronade
When someone engages in fanfaronade they are bragging or engaging in what is called "boastful talk." It is another way of saying that they are being arrogant or egotistical.

Foudroyant
When something hits you foudroyantly, this means that it took you by surprise or came up unexpectedly. Example:

"The doctor said to stay away from people who have the flu. The current virus making everyone sick is very foudroyant."

Kerfuffle
When someone makes a kerfuffle this means that they are making a disturbance of some kind or are disturbing the general state or condition of something.
