Some Football Terms in English

  • 4
As many people know, Metropolitni Expres competes in the Pre Golden Tour 2006 Football tournament, along with other companies. Since we wanted to do a series of English lessons on football terminology, we decided to take this opportunity to use ourselves as real examples.

Metropolitni Expres played some “mean football” over the weekend.

Because we are here expresially for you, we had to make sure that we won all of our five matches, otherwise we would be forced to teach you words like defeat, loss, or slaughter, and be forced to swallow those absurd “politically correct” English phrases such as “we didn’t have our best day” or “the results were not as we would have preferred them to be.”

Fortunately, despite some very real and talented competition from the other companies we played, we were able to win, -- and handily.

Expresial Weapons - Simon Strikes
Simon Merta is our Sports Editor here are Metropolitni Expres. Simon takes sports very seriously, and this is also true when he plays in them.

For a guy who sits around typing and editing sports stories, he is deceptively fast on the football field and nothing escapes him. Simon scored a couple of goals, managing to break away from a group of defenders to go solo and drive towards the goalie, using power and speed to score.

Some "Fike Sneaks"
Tomas Fikrle is our Photo Editor here at Metropolitni Expres. He also loves playing frisbee.

“Fike,” unlike Simon, is tall and lanky. While they are both fast on their feet, Fikrle will use any angle or part of his body to score a goal.

While Simon will also do the same, Simon relies more on speed and brute force.

Fike will also drive the ball towards you, but just when you think you know where he’s going to kick it, of course, he won’t kick it there.
