More “J” Expressions

Here’s yet more expressions that begin the with the letter "J" in the English language. "Just what the doctor ordered" - this expression essentially means that something has happened that is very good, just as if your doctor had ordered it for you. The presumption here is that doctors would only order or do things which are good for you, of course.

Examples: "That week long vacation in the fresh air at the sunny beach was just what the doctor ordered for Pavel. He did the right thing by leaving for a week to rest" or "She was just what the doctor ordered. Petr has been very happy ever since they met, I think they’ll probably get married."

Juggling Act
When someone performs a juggling act, unless they are in a circus and are performing, this means that they have a lot of things going on and probably have too much to handle. Example:

"Tamara had better perform a good juggling act, she has her new baby, her husband and also her new job to all take care of."

Jumping out of my skin
When someone jumps out of their skin, this means that "it" was too much for them to handle. What the specific meaning here is depends on the context. Examples:

"That new horror movie had me jumping out of my skin, it was really scary" or "I thought I was going to jump out of my skin, I was so upset with that person."

Just Cause
When someone has "just cause" this means they have the right, full or legal cause to do whatever. Examples:

"The police had just cause to search that man’s home after finding a live bomb in his backyard" or "The courts have just cause to make sure that criminals are punished according to the laws."

Jokes of the Day

The Internet is full of wonderful things, there seems to be no limit to people’s imaginative uses for it.

One of the funniest Web sites is www.prankbot.com.

A "bot" is a small program which performs automated functions. Without bots, the Internet would not function.

Bots do everything from handle secure transactions to unfortunately, spread viruses. What bots do depends of course on the person who designs and programs them.

Prankbot is harmless in that it contains a series of bots which will help you pull practical jokes on only those who you love.

Whether you want to send a phony bill to your best friends, or let them know they have won a prize that does not exist, prankbot has something for everyone.

Presently, the Web site exists only in English. Perhaps there is one here in the Czech Republic or perhaps the European Union. If you know of one like prankbot.com, please let us know.

In the meantime, you can use prankbot to "get even" with all of those Americans, and it’s a great way to practice your English!
