Knowing Your Clichés - 1

  • 2
A cliché is an expression which becomes very popular very quickly. After many people start using it, clichés become what is called tiresome. For authors and writers of English, many tend to use clichés, and they often fight battles with editors who always seek to remove them.

Here are some of the more common clichés in English:

Blind as a Bat
When someone is "as blind as a bat," this means that they have a hard time seeing things clearly.

In reality, bats are actually very good at finding things in the dark, thanks to their built in radar systems; literally, this phrase nonetheless means that a person just can’t see the forest from the trees -- which of course is another cliché. :-)

Easy As Pie and Piece of Cake
When something is "as easy as pie," this means that it is very simple, easy to understand or work with, and presents no known problems. A similar cliché to this is "It’s a piece of cake."

Smart as a Whip
When something or someone is "as smart as a whip," this means that they are very clever or intelligent or think very fast on their feet -- which is also another cliché.

As you can gather by now, the English language has a bazillion clichés; indeed, some Hollywood "B" movies consist of scripts which are almost entirely clichés.

Dumb As a Box of Rocks
When someone is not "as smart as a whip," the exact opposite is someone who is "as dumb as a box of rocks." This is another cliché, of course.

Sad But True
When something is "sad but true," it is literally sad, but it is also true.

Joke of the Day: Scoop Doggie Dog

"Dear iDNES.cz

This is my dawg, Scooper.

As you can see, he knows how to scoop the poop, all on his own!

I trained him for six munths, and I feel that here, expresially in Prague, if more Czech dog owners took the time to train their pets like I did, this city would be much cleaner.

Imagine if every dog could be trained to scoop their own poop?

After six munths of this, the city of Prague would begin to realize that they don’t need to spend money on scoop retrieval services anymore, and our honest politicians, which rule this country of course, could then pass along these scoop savings to us Czechs, like lowering the price of the Metro tickets.

Now, I’ll teach Scooper to speak Czech."
