According to scientists, a wave is a disturbance which travels through any medium by which energy is transferred from one particle (or piece) of the medium to another, without causing any permanent displacement of the medium itself.

For an illustration of this, please see the photo on the right.

A wave, therefore, is also a single cycle of such a disturbance. Examples:

"The shock wave from the sonic boom created by that airplane caused windows to break from as far away as 10 kilometers" or "The average radio wave is not powerful enough to penetrate the actual tunnels of the Metro system here in Prague."

A Wave
When "a wave of something" either hits, occurs or takes place, this essentially means that there is a lot of them. Examples:

"That first wave of soldiers during the D-Day landing at Normandy, France, in 1944 really hit the beach fast" or "Wave after wave of people flocked to Prague to see Pink Floyd’s last concert together as a group."

This word can also be used to communicate about social events or people’s ideas and opinions. Examples:

"A conservative wave is overtaking the government in this latest series of elections, they’re not going to increase taxes" or "There is a wave of sympathy for her, she was favored to win the competition but ended up losing."
