Know Your Travel English

Now that nice weather is here, people are starting to travel and take their vacations. Here are some expressions that might help you while you are away. When people go to "catch some rays" this is another way of saying that they are going to go out in the sun and lay down.

They could be relaxing, working on their suntan, reading, or doing any number of things. If you’re going to catch some rays you’re going to be out in the sun, period. Example:

"He is from California, but likes to go to Australia and Hawaii to catch his rays and do some surfing."

Soak up the sun
In a similar way the expression "soaking up the sun" also refers to someone who is also busy catching some rays. These expressions mean the same thing.

Catch a fresh breeze
When someone wants to "catch a fresh breeze" this means they want to go outside and go to some place where the air is fresh and breezy. Example:

"He likes to go walking along the beach in the morning to catch the fresh breeze from the ocean air."

Catch a wave
This is a term that was made popular during the 1960s. When you "catch a wave" or "catch some waves" this means that you are going into the water or are planning to go surfing or swimming. Examples:

"He went to Hawaii to catch some waves and practice for the upcoming surfing championship."

Just chilling or Just chillin’
When someone is "just chilling" this is another way of saying they are relaxing or being quiet.

Looky-Loos or Lookee-Loos
A "lookee-loo" is a person who goes in stores and just looks but never actually buys anything! Some people call them "window shoppers," but window shoppers don’t go inside stores.

Lookee-loos are different in that they’ll not only look inside a window, but they’ll even go into stores and restaurants to see whatever, then turn around and leave. Lookee-loos never spend any money. Examples:

"The woman decided to leave the beach, there were too many lookee-loos walking around, she felt uncomfortable" or "Our boss said that when a customer comes into our store, we are to ask them if they need some help. Our boss thinks that by making a point to ask if they want help, we can eliminate the lookee-loos easily."

Celebrating Those Dumb BUTT True Laws

In celebration of the never ending human tendency to actually waste taxpayer money on passing dumb laws, here’s a few more of them which have been passed by politicians that were actually elected by the average voter. Sometimes, democracy can be scary.

1. Hartford, Connecticut: it is illegal for a married man to kiss his wife on Sundays.

2. Waterbury, Connecticut: it is against the law for a beautician to sing, hum or whistle while they are servicing you.

3. Guilford, Connecticut: during Christmas season, only white-colored lights are allowed to be put on display.

(Comment: Clearly, this is illegal discrimination against all the other colors, especially red and green.)

4. Denver, Colorado: it is against the law to drive a black car on Sundays.

5. Marshalltown, Iowa: it is illegal for a HORSE to eat a firehydrant!

(Comment: Is this even possible? Also, how many times did this happen before the "problem" became "so serious" that an actual law had to be passed to stop those "evil" fire hydrant eating horses?)
