The word force has several definitions in the English language. Let's explore a few of them. The first definition of force has to do with physics. According to physicists, "force" is anything which causes or creates an influence on something.

Examples: "That magnet has a very strong force, let's make sure we keep it away from the computers" or "He is a powerful force within the company, people always listen to what he says even though he is not really the boss."

Force
Another definition of the word force has to do with the required elements that are necessary to get something done or to achieve something.

Example: "We need to use more force if we are going to get that car up that steep hill."

Force or Forces
Yet another definition of the word force has to do with what are called resources. The resources that are necessary to accomplish something, are also called a force. What kind of force it is, depends on what is trying to be achieved or what is involved.

Examples: "The United States military has a fighting force of approximately one million soldiers" or "The workforce in that company is highly educated. Almost every employee has at least a four year degree from a college or a university."

Show of Force
When someone or something makes a point to give or make or exhibit a "show of force" this means that they are doing something deliberately in order to be seen doing it.

Examples: "The police were determined to make a show of force against the protestors, so they all dressed up in their anti-riot gear to make sure they were taken seriously" or "The Americans want to make sure that there is a show of force so that the enemy sees it, and does not think that they can attack again."

The Force
The use of the phrase "The Force" took on a whole new meaning when the movie Star Wars first became a cultural phenomenon in the late 1970s. In Star Wars, so-called "Jedi Knights" use "The Force" to move objects and influence minds.

A: They are the only two things that can fill a stadium with thousands of people and get all of them to say "Jesus Christ!"

2. A woman comes home and tries to tell her husband that there is a "problem" with their car.

"Honestly," the wife says, "there's not only a problem with our car, but I am sure that there is water in the carburator."

"That's impossible!" replied her husband very quickly. "My dear, please don't take this the wrong way, but you don't even know what a carburator is."

"I know, but I know there's water in the carburator. I think you should have a look."

"OK, where is the car parked?"
"In our swimming pool."
