The word black has several definitions in the English language. Let’s explore some of them. The first definition of the word black has to do with a color. You can also use the word black when you are referring to various popular drinks such as tea or coffee.

While, technically speaking from a pure physics standpoint black is not a color (it is the absorption of all colors without any instance of light reflecting back out to be observed), from a dictionary or language standpoint the word black refers to a color.

To perhaps best illustrate what black looks like, just think of the color white. Now that you’re thinking of the color white, think exactly of its opposite now. That, is black.

The dictionary defines black as "the color at one extreme end of the scale of grays, opposite to white, absorbing all light incident upon it".

Black
You can use the word black when you are referring to various popular drinks such as tea or coffee. Examples:

"He is so tired this morning that he wants his coffee black, with nothing else in it" or "He likes his coffee really strong, the more black the better" or (in Texas) "He likes his coffee really strong, the blacker the better" or (also in the southern United States such as Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, etc.) "His coffee is so black, it will put hair on your chest" or "He likes his coffee black enough to sprout chest hairs".

Black
The term Black, with a capital "B" out of sincere respect, is also used in English to refer to people of Afro-American heritage. Examples:

"The city of Oakland, California, has a population that is roughly 90% Black, 5% White, 2% Chinese, and the rest are a diverse mixture of other nationalities" or "He was a member of the Black Student Union at John F. Kennedy High School in Fremont, California."

Black
When something "looks black" it can mean two things: the situation is either not a good one, or you do not understand the subject or what is going on. Examples:

"It’s all black to me, I’ll never understand quantum mechanics" or "Our situation looks black, I think we need to call the doctors for help."

Black Hole
A black hole is a phenomenon which exists in outer space. It is caused when a star exhausts its nuclear fuel and it collapses within itself.

The resulting gravitational forces pull all of its matter into its center, literally compressing it into nothingness. Some scientists even claim that time literally stops at this so-called "zero-point".

The term "black hole" is also used in business to explain things that drain resources. Examples:

"That construction project was a financial black hole. Thanks to corruption, it was never finished and the company went bankrupt."
