The word bean has many uses in English, quite often in distinctly different ways. Let’s explore a few of them. Beans, or what are commonly referred to even in English by their French name of legumes, are really vegetables, which are complex carbohydrates

Beans are a natural food which is rich in fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals such as Calcium, Iron and Potassium.

When combined with grains, beans can and certainly do provide all essential and complete amino acids, just as efficiently and effectively as do meat and dairy products, but they contain far less fat and of course are virtually cholesterol free. Examples:

"We’re having baked beans tonight out by the campfire, and probably hot dogs along with it" or "Brussels sprouts are a kind of bean which are very rich in vitamins B1 and C, plus the elements of Copper, Sulfur and Iron."

Those Beans
A second definition of the word bean has to do with when it is used in a figurative sense, as in to denote or count towards something. Examples:

"We have to be careful and watch our beans. If we don’t, we won’t have enough money for the entire trip" or "Unfortunately, the bean counters are controlling this production, they’ll never approve any money for our casting party."

In these two examples, the word bean counts for or stands for essentially money or resources.

On the other hand, the term bean counter is another way or saying an accountant or controller, whereas watching one’s beans basically means paying careful attention to one’s resources so that you do not end up on the short side or running out of them.
