Police end siege, kill two gunmen: KARACHI, Sept 11: Police arrested five gunmen and killed two during a three-hour shootout today in Defence Society of Karachi, police said. A four-year-old girl was also killed in the incident, which a police source said was thought to have involved al Qaeda members. Security and intelligence agents had raided a three-storey building in Karachi and arrested two men in the morning, but had to call in police support after other people in the building threw a handgrenade at them, police said. Police surrounded the building and fired teargas and thousands of rounds at it before the gunmen finally surrended, witnesses said. "Two criminals were killed and we have arrested a total of five criminals," provincial police chief Syed Kamal Shah told reporters at the scene, adding that six policemen had been wounded. "We have also found the body of a four-year-old girl in that apartment. She was also hit by a bullet." A police source said the men were thought to be members of the al Qaeda network, and described two of them as Arabs. Shah declined to comment, saying only that investigations would prove who they were. [Reuters]
