ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, AUGUST 12, 2001 (2:00 CDT), (7:00 UTC) - Balloonist Steve Fossett has completed roughly three-fourths of his Pacific Ocean crossing and roughly one-third of his flight around the world. Although he is now about 2,000 miles from the South American coastline, his balloon, Solo Spirit, is due south of New Mexico. Mission Control estimates it will be two to three days before he gets his "feet dry" over Chile.
Fossett has been crossing the South Pacific for five days and currently is approximately 350 miles west of Easter Island.
As of 2:00 CDT (7:00 UTC), Fossett has traveled 8,402 miles (13,522 km) since lifting off on August 4 at 18:06 CDT. He is currently traveling 52 miles per hour (83 km/hr) and is soaring at an altitude of 20,000 feet (6,096 m).
