Christmas has a special, unique vocabulary all of its own

Christmas Eve Is Coming

It’s everyone’s favorite time of year again, unless of course you’re either the Grinch or Mr. Scrooge, for it is Christmas season. Christmas, like every unique event, also has its own special vocabulary of terms. Let’s review a few of them.

Christmas or Christmas?
To many people, Christmas is a religious holiday, created to honor the birth of Jesus Christ.

To others, Christmas is just another holiday, albeit a special one which is noted and distinguished by the mutual exchange of gifts.

While most Americans consider themselves to be "religious," it is a fact that most do not bother going to church during Christmas.

Midnight Mass
For those who do celebrate the spirit of Christmas with religious overtones, it is quite common to attend church either around lunch time on Christmas Eve, for what some faiths call Midday Mass; while other people will go to church much later in the evening, and engage in a ceremony commemorating usually called Midnight Mass, because it takes place late in the evening.

Early Gifts
One popular tradition many people practice during Christmas, is the opening of one gift early. Usually, this takes place during the last week before Christmas arrives, which of course helps add to the excitement.

Decorating Christmas trees
Of course, no Christmas would be complete without a fully decorated Christmas tree.

In addition to stringing up lights to go around the Christmas tree and hanging up Christmas bulbs, people will often also add things like tinsel or angel’s hair to give the tree that soft, glowing look.

Christmas lights come in two basic types: those which stay on all the time or are fixed, vs. ones that blink on and off.

Santa treats, Goodies for Santa
Another popular tradition people engage in during Christmas is to leave a glass of milk and some cookies out for Santa Claus when he comes to visit at night while the children are busy sleeping.

Because Santa is in a hurry all the time, and has lots of deliveries of toys to make, he often takes only a bite or so from the treats you leave him to let you know that he has been there, and appreciates your love and kindness.

 Jokes: Santa Claus and Christmas

2. Q: Why does Santa Claus deliver everyone’s presents?

A: Because no one ever asks for any that will deliver themselves.

3. What’s red, white and falls down the chimney?

A: Santa klutz.

4. Santapplause: the sound that little elves make when they clap their hands after Santa Claus finishes singing Puccini’s Nessun Dorma with Luciano Pavorotti. 5. Q: Who is it that delivers presents to all of the dogs in the Czech Republic during Christmas?

A: Santa Paws, of course!
