Switching Religions
The Korbelová family was originally Jewish. In order to protect themselves from the racism and anti-Semitism which existed at that time, they officially converted to Catholicism.
Escaping from Hitler’s Nazis
Like many people who fled when Hitler’s Nazi’s incorporated the country of Czechoslovakia as a “protectorate of the Reich,” the Korbelová family managed to successfully escape to London.
There’s no question that their defection saved their lives. Like countless millions of others, the Korbelová’s would lose several members of their family to the Holocaust, and to the second world war.
Her Father’s Footsteps
Albright’s father was in the Czech Diplomatic Service before they fled to London. It was from her father, that young Madeline was decidedly influenced, determined that she would also enter foreign service in the diplomatic arena.
After the war ended, the Korbelová’s briefly returned to Czechoslovakia. However, they fled again when the Communists took power, this time landing in the United States in 1948.
Albright Multi-lingual Ph.D.
Albright has a Ph.D. in Public Law and Government. She also speaks Czech, French, Russian, and is nearly fluent in German, Serbian, and Polish.
